New Jersey Lemon Law Rights

What Vehicles are Covered?
A passenger automobile or motorcycle purchased, leased or registered in New Jersey. Excludes the living facilities of motor homes and vehicles registered for commercial use.

Covers used vehicles.

What is a Lemon?
The vehicle is a lemon if it is:

  • Subjected to three or more examinations or repair attempts or, one repair attempt or examination to serious safety nonconformity
  • Out of service for 20 or more calendar days
  • For vehicles purchased/leased on or after October 1, 2009, presumed within earlier of 24,000 miles or two years following original delivery to the consumer

Notice Requirement
Written notice, by certified mail return receipt requested, after two or more repair attempts to same nonconformity or out of service for 20 or more calendar days.
For vehicles purchased/leased on or after October 1, 2009, written notice, by certified mail return receipt requested, after two or more repair attempts to same nonconformity, out of service for 20/45 or more calendar days, or one attempt to serious safety nonconformity.
